High School Football

West Stanly High School hosted Mount Pleasant High for a varsity football game on Friday night. What better than a 27 - 20 overtime victory for West Stanly. Both teams excelled with lots of hard hits and great plays.

Wake at the Lake

A cool fall evening, Elvis impersonators, a demolition derby, screams and clanking sounds of the roller coaster, smells of popcorn, cotton candy and livestock all bring back memories of my youth when I would go to the fair. Here are a few photos of the 2010 Stanly County Fair.

Saturday's weather was perfect for a fall portrait session so with my trustee assistant by my side, Wendi my wife, we headed off to uptown Charlotte to shoot Kelsey's senior portrait. I had forgotten about the parade and there was something going on at the convention center but all in all it went well. Here are a few of the images from that session.

NAPP Selects NASCAR Image as Photo of the Week

The National Association of Photoshop Professionals, NAPP, selected an image of NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin as their "Photo of the Week" for the week of June 28, 2009. Photographers and illustrators world wide submit their work to NAPP by posting them on their portfolios where one image is selected as the Editor's Choice for the "Photo of the Week". The photographers and illustrators submitting their work are the best in the business in the many different fields of photography and graphic illustration and that is what makes this a very special honor.

The photograph of Hamlin was taken during a practice session for the Coca Cola 600 at Lowes Motor Speedway. The intensity of moment is clearly shown in his eyes and on his face. It is quite an honor to be recognized by an organization such as the NAPP, who set the standards for photography, Photoshop and graphics training and education.

Rural Landscape

Traveling down highway NC 200 in northern Union County North Carolina you may pass by this silo and never see it during the day, but when the sun starts to set this monster can be seen for miles. True, the new shinny new metal surface reflects the setting sun, but it is the cross that lights up at night that will get your attention, you just can not miss it. My brother-in-law, Robert, is the one who got me thinking about photographing it. I rode past it at various times of the evening and morning and looked at it from different angles, locations, etc, and decided to shoot it just as the sun was going below the horizon from the edge of the corn field in front of it. To maintain detail in both the shadow and highlight areas I shot five exposures at a 1/3 stop difference. I then used a HDR program to merge the images to create this photograph. I plan on shooting it some more and will post them as some point.

April 15, 2009...the day I did my part to bail out General Motors and Bank of America via the IRS reminded me of a photo that I had shot back in March while I was in DC. The full moon was shinning above the Capital Building as the last bit of sunlight lit up the dome.

Rusty Old Pick Up

There is something about an old vehicle that just draws me to it with my camera. I love the texture of the rust and how the shinny chrome has turned to a dull silver. Here are a few shots of an old Chevy pick up that I ran across in Oakboro, NC.

Cover of The Sporting News

Mike McCarn Photography has made the cover of the Sporting News Special NASCAR issue with a photo of Dale Earnhardt Jr. The photograph, one of several on the cover, was taken while on an assignment for the Associated Press covering the grand opening of Earnhardt Jr's new nightclub, Whiskey River, in downtown Charlotte. A second photograph, that accompanies the article appears on page 61 and was taken on the same assignment.

Sunset in Stanfield

As I was driving down one of those long country driveways the other day I turned to look behind me and saw this sunset with the crescent moon and I just had to pull over and shoot it. This shot is straight out of the camera without any editing, enjoy.
